The Bizarre Obama Swiss Bank Account Strategy

In another attempt to distract the public from Barack Obama’s failed record the presidents’ campaign has released a new campaign ad attacked Mitt Romney’s Swiss bank account:

The 30-second spot, titled (surprise!) “Swiss Bank Account,” begins on the defensive. It describes as “over the top” and “erroneous” a recent commercial from a GOP-leaning super PAC, which charged that billions of dollars from President Obama’s energy projects have gone to factories in foreign countries.

“President Obama’s clean-energy initiatives have created jobs in America, not overseas,” the narration says.

Then the ad pivots, and the rhetorical knives come out. “What about Mitt Romney?” appears on the screen.

As a corporate CEO, Mr. Romney sent jobs to Mexico and China, says the ad. It charges that as Massachusetts governor, he outsourced state jobs to a call center in India.

“It’s just what you’d expect from a guy who had a Swiss bank account,” the spot ends.

How are these ridiculous political tricks representative of the post-partisan presidency that Barack Obama promised? Is this really the strategy the Obama team is going to employ through November: Mitt Romney is rich so you shouldn’t vote for him.

Nevermind that Obama is rich himself and has made millions capitalizing off of his political career. And forget about the fact that having any bank account is not even slightly indicative of how someone might govern as president of the United States. If the president wants to play games with the American people then he is going to lose, plain and simple. Are unemployed people supposed to really care about whether Mitt Romney had a Swiss bank account? How does pointing that out help or prevent them from finding work?

I will be quick to point out when the president makes a smart campaign move (like dropping Joe Biden from the ticket) but this is not it. If the president is proud of his record then he should run on it.
