Even though the Left is obsessed with dissecting and breaking down our society into monolithic voting blocs (African-Americans, women, Catholics, Jews, etc.) the single biggest group in which they have trouble with are those mainly concerned with national security. Sadly for Barack Obama he is following in the footsteps of people like John Kerry in failing to convince anyone of his sincerity in dealing with security issues.
Case in point is the president’s recent battle to take credit for the Osama bin Laden killing. In recent days he has said Mitt Romney would not have made the same call and has produced a number of campaign ads highlighting this talking point. Despite even hardcore leftists like Arianna Huffington calling the ad in question “despicable,” the Obama team continues to spike the ball over the Osama bin Laden killing.
To celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the raid Obama made a surprise trip to Afghanistan to give a campaign speech. Here is a little tidbit:
“But over the last three years, the tide has turned. We broke the Taliban’s momentum. We’ve built strong Afghan security forces. We devastated al Qaeda’s leadership, taking out over 20 of their top 30 leaders. And one year ago, from a base here in Afghanistan, our troops launched the operation that killed Osama bin Laden. The goal that I set — to defeat al Qaeda, and deny it a chance to rebuild — is within reach.”
The goal that you set? I could’ve sworn we all set that goal after 9/11. I’m also pretty sure it was George W. Bush who declared a war on terror in response to that unified goal. The arrogance of the president to take credit for something all Americans should rejoice in is unfathomable. To try and take credit away from our military, especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, is really unconscionable.
Democrats have failed to address the concerns of those national security Americans because they are simply faking it. Obama doesn’t care about the military or the security of this country. He doesn’t care about the war on terror. He doesn’t understand that rooting out terrorist cells in the Middle East and other parts of the world is a central strategy in preventing them from perpetrating their murderous acts on American soil. By taking the fight to them we put them on the defensive and on the run by eliminating their safe havens.
Mitt Romney does not have strong national security credentials but he does have legitimate economic credentials. The Obama team cannot successfully attack Romney on the economy with their record of failed policies so they are trying to attack him on this. It may or may not work but at what cost? Is there really no honor left in politics?
