Ambassador Jon Huntsman Can Someone Please Explain the Jon Huntsman Appeal?

Presidential Candidate Jon Huntsman

Because I really just don’t get it. Why the heck is Jon Huntsman running for President? I see nothing but negatives and there already are enough moderates in the race. Do we really want a presidential race with candidates jockeying on how milquetoast they can be with their policies?

This is just lovely:

Utah Democratic Party chairman Wayne Holland told reporters that Huntsman worked with Democrats to pass cap and trade legislation and embraced Obama’s stimulus plan. Holland says Huntsman only criticism of the economic bailout was that it “should’ve been larger” — a stance that’s anathema to most conservative voters.

“The Jon Huntsman that is announcing his candidacy tomorrow isn’t the Jon Huntsman that most Utahans have known,” Holland said. “It is pandering and not consistent with whom he has been in the past.”

From Time Magagzine:

“He is pro-environment — a little too green for many in his party — and hardly anyone knows who he is.”

When I ask where he disagrees with Obama, he says, “I’m a little reluctant, days off the plane, to take shots.” There’s something to admire in every President he’s known, he adds, and he launches into a canny but glass-half-full rundown on Nixon, Reagan, both Bushes and Obama. The current occupant of the Oval Office, he says, “is trying to pick up the pieces of our economy and make sense of a world grown more complex and confusing.”

From the Daily Beast:

But with a moderate record on key issues like climate change and immigration—not to mention that pesky Obama-appointed ambassadorship he just returned from—Huntsman faces an uphill battle in courting the GOP base.

Let’s not forget about his love note to Barack Obama.

Erick Erickson at Redstate laid out a thorough article on the deficiencies of Jon Huntsman that is also worth a read. He notes his support for cap and trade, civil unions for homosexuals, his closeness with John McCain staffers, his admiration from Barack Obama, his disloyalty to the sitting President of the United States, his support for the stimulus plan that only stimulated Democratic special interests, and so on.

Is Jon Huntsman trying to build his profile for a run at something else? Perhaps a cabinet position? Maybe trying to build a profile for a political organization or business entity? I don’t know.

Moderates do have a nasty habit of winning the GOP nomination, I’ll give him that. But how does he prove himself as the safe choice with moderates like Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Tim Pawlenty? We need more conservatives in the race, not more unprincipled wishy-washy moderates.
