“The past few months have been times of deep personal reflection,” Huckabee said. “Even though I wasn’t actively establishing a campaign organization or seeking financial support to run again, polls have consistently put me at or near the top to be the Republican nominee.”
“But I know that under the best of circumstances, being President is a job that takes one to the limit of his or her human capacity,” he continued. “I can’t know or predict the future, but I know for now my answer is clear and firm: I will not seek the Republican nomination for President this year.”
Everyone had been saying for months, even years, that Huckabee wouldn’t make another go at the presidency. I never thought he really wanted to win in 2007. He never raised any money and it seemed like he was just going through the motions, like it was some sort of game. He didn’t take his campaign all that seriously and benefited from a powerful network of social conservatives essentially running their own campaign for social issues and AGAINST Mitt Romney.
Now that he has a cushy job on Fox News there really isn’t any reason to raise his profile. As someone who really began his careerworking for former televangelist James Robison, he feels at home in broadcasting. My guess is that his career in elected office is over. Don’t look for him to make any more political moves as he has peaked.
But on the other hand maybe Mike Huckabee got scared away from the race by crazy old Ed Rollins, who thought he’d have a seat at the table, or something. To wit, enjoy this video where Chris Wallace eats his lunch:
